All the way to the 1920's! Sound fun? Well, if you visit China, you will get a sense of the same rate of passenger car penetration that was seen in the U.S. back in the 20's. Perhaps that's not reason enough to book a flight now, but take a look at this chart from Credit Suisse on how China compares to the U.S. in a number of different societal and economic milestones. A couple of key points:
* Each person in China today uses about as much electricity as each person in the U.S. in the early 50's.
* Steel consumption in China today is about equal to that of the U.S. today.
* China's GDP per capital is equal to that of the U.S. in 1966.
