The Galaxy Tab's successor arises - called the Galaxy Tab 7.7!

Samsung is the only company which offers three tablets with three different display sizes. But one of them - the 7-inch-model - is from the last generation and just can't compete with the newer ones, especially when it comes to the processor and the OS. It was only a matter of time until Samsung would announce a successor to their very first tablet. And now this time has come! Rumors have been around for a while, but now we've got specs and pictures for you!

As you can tell from the name, the newer Tab will sport a 7.7 inch screen - 0.7 inches bigger than the original one. Further on it will ship with the same processor as the recently-announced Galaxy Note we reported about - a 1.4GHz strong dual-core processor. Since it is a 7-incher, it will run Honeycomb 3.2 which is optimized for this screen size. And of course, Samsung is going to put TouchWiz on it. Luckily, in contrast to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, this one definitely will sport a mircoSD card slot making it possible to increase your storage.
The battery with 5,100mAh is supposed to run the device for 10 hours and in the matter of cameras it got a 3MP camera on the back and a front-facing camera with 2MP.

To elaborate a little bit more on the display, it is a Super AMOLED Plus panel with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. Yes, really - that's the first Super AMOLED dispay on a tablet. And with this resolution it's even more appealing! In our report about the Galaxy Note, we mentioned the poor pixel density of the device. In terms of smartphones, Samsung went from 4 inches with the first Galaxy S all the way up to 5.3 inches with the Galaxy Note - all sporting the same resolution of 800x480 pixels. And now they're doing the same with their tablets - or to be specific, they're doing it exactly the other way around. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has 1280x800 pixels, so does the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and now also the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

It almost seems like Samsung is deadlocked with these two resolutions. Anyways, what might be bad for some of their devices is definitely extremely good for the Galaxy Tab 7.7 sporting the highest pixel density for a tablet worldwide with 196 PPI (pixels per inch). Let's also compare this device to some other tablets:

  1. Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7: 196 PPI

  2. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9: 169 PPI

  3. Samsung Galaxy Tab: 169 PPI

  4. HTC Flyer: 169 PPI

  5. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: 149 PPI

  6. Asus EeePad Transformer: 149 PPI

  7. Acer Iconia Tab: 149 PPI

  8. Motorola Xoom: 149 PPI

  9. HP TouchPad: 132 PPI

  10. Apple iPad 2: 132 PPI

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 really outperforms every competitor in this comparison. Not to forget, the device weighs only 335 grams (0.74 pounds) and is most certainly going to be about as thin as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 - but there is no exact statement, yet. Just like pricing and availability is still unknown.

To sum up, this is going to be one hell of a tablet. With the microSD card slot, the 1.4GHz processor and the higher pixel density it even exceeds the currently so successful Galaxy Tab 10.1. If I didn't have Samsung's 10.1-incher already, this would be my next tablet. And now enjoy some pictures of this beauty:
